THE INTERIOR

A network map of the inner life, as the monastics drew it

Evagrius counted eight thoughts. Cassian carried them west. The hesychasts built a watchtower. This is their map of what happens inside a person, laid out as a network you can fly through: the heart, the eight, the life of a single thought, the fortresses, the watchtower, and what is not you.

This map takes the enemy seriously, and refuses him attention. The desert fathers said three things at once: the thoughts are real, some of them are not yours, and none of them can read your heart. They watch what you linger on. So the rule here is not to fight. Name the thought. Refuse it. Tell someone. Turn to Christ. A thought that frightens you is the enemy’s signature, not your guilt. The psychological reading and the spiritual one are overlapping circles here, not rivals; the remedies work in both. This map was drawn for monks who had a spiritual father. If the fear will not stop, do not walk it alone.
