Now that we've explored this pattern in everyday life (information/authority paired with material/power), let's consider whether similar patterns might appear in the Bible.
This is just one way of looking at things - you might see it differently. But it's interesting to explore whether these themes resonate with biblical stories.
Genesis 1 - Creation Itself
"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
Could the very first sentence be pointing to this pattern? It's worth considering.
Notice what happens next:
Heaven acts first: "And God said, 'Let there be light'"
Information comes first (the word, the command)
Heaven (God's will) speaks
Earth responds: "And there was light"
Matter responds to the word
Earth manifests what heaven declared
This seems to repeat throughout the creation account:
God speaks → Creation appears
"Let there be..." → "And it was so"
Word first, then reality
Could this suggest a pattern where information precedes manifestation? It's an interesting possibility.
Genesis 2 - Adam and Eve
"The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." (Genesis 2:7)
Look at the pattern:
Dust (earth/material)
Breath of life (heaven/spirit)
Both combined = Living human
Then God creates woman:
"It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (Genesis 2:18)
Man (representing heaven in this relationship)
Woman (representing earth - the helper who manifests, executes, brings life)
Together they become "one flesh" - heaven and earth united
If this pattern is there, it certainly doesn't suggest inferiority! In our observation, "earth" has the POWER. Without the woman, nothing gets born, no family gets built, no home gets created. The two aspects would need each other equally.
The Tabernacle and Temple
God gives incredibly detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle:
Heaven: Detailed blueprints given to Moses
Exact measurements
Specific materials
Precise instructions
"Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you" (Exodus 25:9)
Earth: The craftsmen execute the plan
Bezalel and Oholiab (filled with skill)
They take the materials
They follow the information
The physical tabernacle appears
Why might God give such detailed instructions? Perhaps it suggests that information and execution both matter - that following patterns precisely has significance.
The design itself shows the pattern:
Most Holy Place (innermost, most "heaven")
Holy Place (middle, mediating space)
Outer Court (outermost, most "earth")
Heaven → Earth, from inner to outer.
Christ - The Perfect Union
"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." (John 1:14)
This is the ultimate statement of heaven and earth united:
The Word (heaven, information, divine logos)
Became flesh (earth, material, human body)
Jesus is both fully God (heaven) and fully man (earth)
Colossians 1:15-17: "He is the image of the invisible God... all things were created through him and for him... in him all things hold together."
Christ is the mediator:
Between God (heaven) and humanity (earth)
Between divine will (heaven) and physical reality (earth)
In Him, heaven and earth are perfectly integrated
Head and Body
The Apostle Paul uses this imagery constantly:
"Christ is the head of the church, his body." (Ephesians 5:23)
Christ = Head = Heaven (authority, direction, information)
Church = Body = Earth (power, action, manifestation)
"The head cannot say to the feet, 'I don't need you!'" (1 Corinthians 12:21)
Paul seems to be emphasizing mutual need - the head can't function without the body. Could this suggest that both aspects are essential?
Husband and Wife
"The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church." (Ephesians 5:23)
Could this be describing a pattern rather than a hierarchy of value? Consider:
Husband = Heaven position in marriage (gives direction)
Wife = Earth position in marriage (manifests the family life)
But immediately Paul says: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." (Ephesians 5:25)
Heaven must LOVE earth. The head must serve the body. Authority must respect power.
And to wives: "The wife must respect her husband." (Ephesians 5:33)
Earth must respect heaven. The body must honor the head. Power must cooperate with authority.
When both happen: Beautiful marriage that glorifies God.
The Pattern in Creating Life
Consider how this pattern might work in creating new life:
The man brings the "blueprint":
The seed contains DNA - literally information, instructions
This is like heaven providing the plans
The seed is tiny but contains the entire blueprint
The woman manifests the blueprint:
She gathers materials (eating food that becomes the baby)
She builds according to the instructions
She gives power and substance to what was just information
Nine months of earth-work to manifest what the seed contained
The seed is paradoxical - it's an "earthy" piece of heaven. Physical, yet carrying pure information. Small, yet containing everything needed.
The Pattern in Identity and Naming
This might also explain traditional naming customs:
The man brings identity (heaven):
Traditionally gives his last name to wife and children
Provides the family identity, the "blueprint" for who they are
Brings his faith system, values, cultural framework
Sets the vision for what kind of family they'll be
The woman manifests that identity (earth):
Takes his name (traditionally) - accepting the blueprint
Creates the actual family culture in daily life
Makes the identity real through countless actions
If from another culture, she might integrate into his
When this doesn't align - for instance, if a wife refuses to integrate into her husband's culture or faith system - it often creates conflict. Not because one is "better," but because heaven and earth are pulling in different directions. The blueprint and the building don't match.
Of course, modern couples might handle this differently. But understanding the traditional pattern helps explain why certain arrangements create more friction than others. When heaven (identity/vision) and earth (manifestation/daily life) aren't aligned, tension is natural.
The Lord's Prayer
"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10)
Look at the structure:
In heaven (where God's will already IS)
On earth (where God's will needs to be manifested)
The prayer is asking: Let earth match heaven
Heaven → Earth: God's will (information/authority) should organize earthly reality (material/power).
New Creation
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth." (Revelation 21:1)
Notice: Heaven AND Earth both renewed. God doesn't destroy earth and leave only heaven. He renews BOTH.
"The dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them." (Revelation 21:3)
Heaven and earth finally, permanently united. No more separation. God (heaven) dwelling with humanity (earth) forever.
Other Possible Examples
If you look for this pattern, you might notice it in various places:
How Law Creates Spirit - The Attraction Pattern
Here's an interesting observation about how "law" creates "spirit" or "vibe":
Consider how a woman chooses a man:
A man consists of countless "laws" - his physical form, health, mental patterns
His value structure, habits, and behaviors are all "laws" he follows
All these laws combined give off a "spirit" or "vibe"
The woman is attracted to the overall spirit these laws create
Now consider the Temple and God's Law:
God gave Moses detailed instructions (laws) for the Temple
These physical specifications created a presence that showed God's "spirit"
The same laws were to be embodied by the Jewish people
When Jews follow God's law well, they embody God's "vibe"
This creates an attraction pattern:
Other nations see the Jews living by these laws
They feel the "spirit" or "vibe" this creates
When done well, it's deeply attractive
They want to be part of this identity
Look at King Solomon's reign:
When he executed God's law excellently
Other nations were incredibly impressed
Queens and kings traveled to see him
They brought gifts (earth supporting heaven)
They wanted to share their resources with Israel
Why? The "vibe" of God's law executed well was attractive
The Queen of Sheba didn't just admire Solomon's wealth - she was drawn to the spirit created by God's law being lived out. She wanted to participate in that identity.
This pattern suggests: Good law, well executed, creates an attractive spirit that naturally draws support.
The Smell of the Spirit - A Pleasant Aroma
The Bible often uses smell/aroma to describe this spiritual attraction:
"We are the aroma of Christ to God" (2 Corinthians 2:15)
Think about how smell works:
You can't see smell, but it's powerfully real
Good smell attracts, bad smell repels
Smell travels and affects the atmosphere
You "wear" your smell wherever you go
When we follow God's law well:
We create a "pleasant aroma" spiritually
Our words are clean, not "rotten tongue" that stinks
Our actions give off good "smell" that others sense
This aroma rises with our prayers to God
God finds this smell pleasing
The incense in the Temple:
Physical incense represented prayers rising to God
Had to be made exactly according to God's formula (law)
When done right, created a beautiful aroma
Wrong incense was offensive (remember Nadab and Abihu)
This is why Scripture warns against:
Corrupt speech (creates bad smell)
Dishonesty (spiritual stench)
Pride (offensive odor to God)
Bitterness (makes everything around smell bad)
And encourages:
Words of grace (pleasant aroma)
Acts of love (sweet smell)
Worship and gratitude (incense rising)
Humble service (fragrant offering)
When a person or nation follows God's law well, they literally "smell good" spiritually. Others are drawn to this pleasant aroma, even if they can't explain why. They want to be near it, support it, participate in it.
Conversely, when law is violated, it creates a spiritual stench that repels - even those who don't know God sense something is "off."
Prophet, Priest, and King - The Balance that Creates Good Smell
Here's a deeper pattern about what creates that "pleasant aroma":
The Three Functions (in a nation or in you personally):
Prophet (Heaven-aligned):
Hears from God/heaven/higher reality
Your consciousness, awareness of truth
Receives instructions from above
Knows what SHOULD be
Priest (Earth-connected):
Connected to people/body/earthly needs
Hears the prayers and wishes from below
Brings earth's needs up to heaven
Knows what IS needed
King (The Executor):
The decision-maker who must balance both
Listens to the Prophet (what heaven says)
Listens to the Priest (what earth needs)
Executes decisions that honor both
When the King balances well - Pleasant Aroma:
Look at Solomon at his best:
He listened to God (Prophet function) - asked for wisdom
He cared for his people (Priest function) - understood their needs
He executed justice wisely (King function) - like with the two mothers
Result: Israel "smelled so good" that queens traveled to experience it
The Flow Pattern:
Priest brings earth's prayers UP to heaven
Prophet brings heaven's answer DOWN to earth
King EXECUTES the balance between them
When balanced = pleasant smell rises to God
In Your Personal Life:
Your body has needs (hunger, rest, desires) - Priest function
Your consciousness knows what's right - Prophet function
Your will/executive function decides - King function
When you balance bodily needs with higher purpose = you "smell good"
When imbalanced = spiritual stench
Examples of Imbalance (Bad Smell):
Only Prophet, no Priest: Harsh religiosity, no compassion (stinks of pride)
Only Priest, no Prophet: Indulgence, no standards (stinks of corruption)
King ignoring Prophet: Moral failure (David with Bathsheba)
King ignoring Priest: Oppression (Rehoboam's harsh rule)
The Secret of Pleasant Aroma:
The King (executor function) must:
Let Priest bring genuine needs up
Let Prophet bring genuine truth down
Execute decisions that honor both
This creates the "smell" that rises pleasingly to God
In secular terms: When your executive function balances your bodily needs with higher consciousness/reality, you become attractive and effective. People sense you're "well-integrated."
In Christian terms: When you balance earthly needs with God's will through wise execution, you become "the aroma of Christ" - naturally drawing others to God.
This is why Solomon's kingdom was so attractive - he balanced all three functions well (at least initially). The whole nation "smelled good" because the executor function properly balanced heaven and earth.
How This Pattern Works at Different Levels
In God's Relationship with His People:
The same Prophet/Priest/King pattern creates or destroys the "pleasant aroma":
Prophet function: God gives law/instruction from heaven
Priest function: People's needs and prayers rise from earth
King function: People execute/live out the balance
When this works:
Obedience = pleasant smell = blessing (heaven and earth aligned)
Nations are attracted (like to Solomon's Israel)
The "aroma" draws others to want to participate
When it fails:
Disobedience = spiritual stench = curse (out of sync)
Nations are repelled or become enemies
The bad smell warns others to stay away
The Role of Prophets (Heaven's Voice):
Receive word from God - they "smell" what heaven wants
Speak it to the people - bringing heaven's fragrance to earth
Call people to align - "You stink! Return to God's ways!"
When ignored: the nation's smell gets worse
The Role of Priests (Earth's Voice):
Smell the people's needs - connected to earthly reality
Bring prayers up like incense - literally "sweet savor" to God
Bring blessing down - distributing heaven's pleasant aroma
They manage the "smell exchange" between heaven and earth
The Role of Kings (The Executor):
Must balance Prophet and Priest to smell good
Good kings create pleasant national aroma (David, Solomon)
Bad kings create stench (Ahab, Manasseh)
Their "smell" affects the entire nation
Examples:
David: Balanced prophet (heart after God) with priest (cared for people) = "sweet psalmist"
Solomon early: Perfect balance = nations came to smell the goodness
Solomon late: Lost balance (many wives, other gods) = smell went bad
Josiah: Restored the balance = brought back the good smell
Why This Might Matter
Could these patterns help us understand Scripture and life in a different way? It's worth considering.
When you read Scripture with this pattern in mind, you might notice:
Why God cares so much about obedience (it affects the "smell")
Why prophets use smell language ("Your incense is detestable to me")
Why some kings succeeded and others failed (balance vs. imbalance)
Why nations were drawn to or repelled by Israel (spiritual aroma)
How the Temple incense represented this whole system
In your personal life, this pattern might explain:
Why you feel "off" when ignoring conscience (prophet) or body (priest)
Why balanced people are naturally attractive
Why extreme positions (all rules or all freedom) feel wrong
How to make decisions that create peace (good smell)
Why some people have a "presence" that draws others
The Prophet/Priest/King balance suggests:
Listen to your conscience (prophet in you)
Honor your real needs (priest in you)
Make wise decisions (king in you)
When balanced = you "smell good" to God and others
This isn't the only way to understand these things, of course. But it's one lens that connects many dots - from personal psychology to national prosperity, from marriage dynamics to spiritual attraction.
Whether you fully see these patterns or not, considering them might help you understand why:
Some relationships work and others don't
Some leaders attract followers naturally
Some people seem to have God's favor
Balance matters more than extremes
The "vibe" or "smell" of a person or place matters so much
The exploration itself - looking for these patterns - can deepen our understanding of both Scripture and daily life.
