Winner of the Academy Award, and the very last Silly Symphony — the series that began with Flowers and Trees ends here, which makes it a bookend for the most influential run of shorts in animation history. It is also simply excellent: a colour remake of Disney's own earlier version, with the loneliness given real weight and no dialogue at all. Andersen's story has rarely been told more directly.
The duckling's rejection is genuinely sad and upsets some small children before the ending arrives.
