The Tortoise and the Hare

Big race. Hare, fast and in lead, stops to loaf and show off to girl bunnies. Tortoise, plodding along at steady, slow pace, wins, although hare tries a last minute burst of speed.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). Max Hare's speed is the technical achievement — the animators found ways to suggest velocity beyond what the frame rate could literally show, using smears, multiples and sheer audacity, and Tex Avery among others took careful notes. It is a perfect seven minutes: one joke, told at exactly the right length, with two of the best-designed characters in the Silly Symphonies.
