Aesop's fable, and the source of one of the studio's most durable songs — the grasshopper's carefree anthem was popular enough that Disney later handed the tune to Goofy and kept using it for years. The film softens Aesop considerably: the ants take the grasshopper in, which was a deliberate choice made during the Depression and says a good deal about what the studio thought audiences needed to hear in 1934.
