The most historically significant cartoon ever made. Not the first sound cartoon and not even the first Mickey Mouse film produced, but the first to use synchronised sound as an integral part of the comedy rather than an accompaniment — and its success in New York in November 1928 effectively decided that animation would be a sound medium. Everything downstream of it, including everything else in this archive, exists in its shadow. Mickey here is a mischievous, slightly cruel deckhand, nothing like the character he became.
