A Christmas short with real teeth. Mickey, destitute, sells his own dog to a horrible rich child so he can buy presents for a family of orphan kittens. It is far bleaker than the studio's later Christmas output and is remembered fondly precisely for that — the sentiment is earned rather than assumed, and the reunion at the end lands because the loss was allowed to hurt.
Mickey sells Pluto, and the middle of the short is genuinely upsetting before it resolves.
