Clock Cleaners
Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are cleaning a large clock. Among the complications: Mickey fights a sleeping stork that doesn't want to leave, Donald gets tangled up in the main-spring, and Goofy is inside the bell when the clock strikes four.
Frequently named the single greatest Mickey Mouse cartoon ever made, and a favourite of animators in particular. Mickey, Donald and Goofy clean a skyscraper clock tower, and each gets a self-contained masterpiece: Mickey against a stork, Donald against a mainspring that answers back, and Goofy concussed by the bell and sleepwalking along a girder in a sequence of extraordinary sustained tension. The staging of height is as good as anything in silent comedy, and the three personalities have never been more cleanly separated. If you watch one Mickey short from this archive, make it this or The Band Concert.
The climax is played out on a swaying clock hand hundreds of feet up; the vertigo is the point and it unsettles some viewers.
